All About Mr. Stevens
I was born in Arizona to a gold miner (Dad) and a mechanical engineer (Mom) and also have a brother who is two years younger than me (he's a manager of a Sherwin Williams paint store in Hot Springs, Arkansas). We moved around a lot because of my dad's job. From Arizona to Northern Nevada to Southern Nevada, my life growing up was filled with plenty of great adventures. In high school, I played soccer and baseball and was involved in Student Council, Honors Society, and a few other clubs. After graduating in 2001, I went to chase the dream of playing professional baseball at Taft College in Taft, California. Following my two year stint in Taft, I was recruited to play baseball at California State University, Los Angeles. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury ended my playing career and left me with a lot of questions about my future. I decided to stick with what I enjoyed - math. Flip-flopping between engineering, crime scene investigation, physics, and mathematics, my major ended up being mathematics with an emphasis in education.
Graduating in 2006 was perfect timing to say the least. I interviewed with Ms. Terri Simon at Nellie Coffman Middle School and have been here ever since. Going out on a whim to visit Cathedral City and the Coachella Valley was a great idea that I'm happy I made. Since being here, I have taught 8th grade math and Algebra 1. I have also taught elective classes like Service Learning and currently teaching Engineering, Robotics, and Design. I am passionate about providing meaning and applications for the learning that the students are doing.
Recently, I have been asked to lead a group of tech-savvy teachers on creating a website that teachers can use as a resource to integrate iPads into the classroom. Getting my Masters in Educational Technology has proved to be very helpful in getting things set up and running. It's a great group of people and an amazing way to provide the forward thinking that is needed in our district. I have presented at the Mini-CUE conference, various professional developments on iPad integration in the classroom, and most recently the CUE Conference in Palm Springs.
In 2008, I married the person that fulfills a giant place in my heart. We moved very fast, buying a house, a car, travelling and seeing friends, family, and incredible places. In 2010, we welcomed the most handsome young man into the world by the name of Luke. He has been an incredible joy in our lives and we are happy to say that he is a part of the family. In September of 2012, we brought in another member of the family by the name of Nolan. Life in the Stevens household is very crazy these days!
Outside of school, I enjoy being active. I go to a gym called Crossfit that gives me the best workout of my life. I also enjoy baseball, football, hockey, hiking, camping, kayaking, fishing, more fishing, and playing board games with friends and family. It's been a wild ride on this rollercoaster we call life, but my hands are up and I'm enjoying every turn!
